Snowboard Level 1

Welcome to the American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI)! The Snowboard Level 1 Assessment is the first step in your exciting career as a snowboard instructor.

Level 1 events are typically offered several times during each season at areas around the division. They are run by Northern Intermountain and appear on the events schedule each year. To learn more about Level 1 events in NI, check the event calendar or ask your snowsports school director to see if an event is coming to your mountain.

The Level 1 certification consists of a one-day evaluated clinic. Level 1 candidates are evaluated in three categories: teaching ability, technical knowledge, and riding ability. Candidates must pass with a 70% or higher to achieve Level 1 certification.

The requirements for all levels of certification are based on the Snowboard Teaching System (STS) and are found in the latest version of the AASI National Standards.

How do I become Level 1 certified?

– You must be a current member of AASI-NI or another division. For more information on membership, head over to the membership page. If you are a member of another division, you must seek permission from your home division before participating in the event.
– You must be employed by a ski/snowboard school within the geographic boundaries of Northern Intermountain, unless you are not a member of NI and you are taking the exam as a member of another division.
– Read and be familiar with the Snowboard Technical Manual, American Association of Snowboard Instructors (AASI).
– It is recommended, but not required, that you attend at least one 100 Level Snowboard clinic.
– Complete the Snowboard Level 1 e-Learning Course.
– Successfully complete the Level 1 evaluated clinic.
